Why Horror?
We decided to pick Horror for our opening scene. What inspired me to pick this genre is the fact that I grew up watching horror movies with my family whether it was with my siblings or at a sleepover with my cousins. Horror movies have so much suspense when made correctly which is one of the main reasons why I enjoy watching them so much. Some films that inspired me to choose horror as our film for our scene opening were "The Ring" and "The Conjuring". Some elements that I believe every horror movie should have is the constant feeling of wanting to find out more about whats going to occur next.
The films that I previously stated are what inspired me to choose Horror as our topic. In the opening scene of "The Conjuring" it starts with a close up of a doll and the lighting is dark which already gives it an eerie feeling and later shows the two girls talking to a guy which appears to be someone investigating the paranormal occurrences in the home. After they show the scene of the ladies talking to a guy it shows the girls coming back home to a note that says "Miss me?" and the doll sitting in the hallway. They proceeded to throw the doll away in the dumpster after finding out that their spare room has been torn apart. Later that night there was someone knocking on the door but in reality there was no one there and once they opened it they only saw the same note that they saw earlier. As all of this is happening they also add music to build up more suspense so that the viewer stays on the edge of their seat and wants to know whats going to happen as they continue to investigate the doll. The Ring was also a scary movie for me as a kid that I enjoyed watching because of how it is Visually and the time period of it. The opening scene for this film also starts off with two girls who are in their room hanging out and one of them ask her friend if shes ever seen the tape that kills you after you watch it. This gives us an idea of teens curiosity and shows us that the younger kids will try anything in order to see if something is true or not. The girl then starts to scare her friend by saying she watched the tape last weekend and she starts choking to scare her friend. Eerie sound effects were added here to make the audience also believe that she watched the tape but she starts laughing and they begin to joke around until they actually get a phone call. This creates suspense and makes the audience want to know who's calling but when they do pick up no one is on the other side. As we observe and analyze different opening scenes from different scenes we notice key elements to making a successful horror movie.
